About NSCS

We are the North Shuswap Childcare Society (NSCS), a society which has recently formed out of mutual passion to provide the North Shuswap with the essential service of licensed child care. Our singular goal as a non-profit society is to create high quality early learning and child care spaces for children from birth through school age. Our intention is that this child care will be equitable, accessible, and affordable for North Shuswap families.

Our society currently has four directors: Kaytlyn MacDonald (president), Carlie Pellett (Vice President), Kimberly Martin (Treasurer) and Sally McLean (secretary). Professionally, we are a licensed practical nurse, two teachers, and an ECE. We are acutely aware that for many of our colleagues in health care, community care, and education, as well as for workers in other essential services, the absence of child care in the North Shuswap is a serious impediment to working here. On a personal level, our group includes three working parents juggling care for a total of eight young children.

Child care creation and licensing is a complicated process involving research and planning, grant writing, financial and legal expertise, building and design, policy writing, and compliance with licensing regulations. We have devoted ourselves to the tasks of understanding what is needed, accessing available resources, and forming necessary partnerships to make this happen.

Currently there is no licensed childcare available in our community, nor has there been in the last 25 years. Our population is growing significantly and our communities inability to keep essential working contributors is due to the lack of childcare available.
